HO Model Train Layout
By admin | February 15, 2010
That is an extremely small nook. It is 4’ x 8’ so it will do. That’s a good location for it though. It’s by that sky light where it gets some sun light. It’s clean and dry. The pantry is near by so you won’t have far to trudge for a bite. So here are some ideas for making it better:
Get a good Model Train Table:
It is much better to have an good display space for your train setup right from the beginning. You can design a sturdy surface or countertop in your own work area. If you do, you could want to take into account the negative side of building a model train display area that is attached to the architecture of your dwelling. It’s a lot easier to live with a model display that we can haul when needed. Really good hobby tables can be located by just doing a simple search on the internet. These tables are manufactured to link to each other so that you can fit almost any area as you would like and so that if you rethink your design at a future date, they are easily altered into new designs and into new dimensions. strong, lightweight, easily movable—they’re everything you want in hobby table. Portability may also be significant if you ever choose to motor your design to a model train get together. If you relocate, being able to keep your set up roughly as is can also be a big help.
Keep your HO model train layout simple:
Because your area is so limited you will desire to keep it uncomplicated. Choose between three simple configurations. Each has its pros and cons. The basic oval gives you lots room on the inside of the layout so that you might have a large HO model railroad city in the eye. This will draw attention from your train. A figure 8 leaves you less space for crafting accessories and buildings and leaves the attention back on your train. Concentric tracks with a connecter between them can really slice into this interior space although it will still allow you to place some interesting accessories in the eye of the track. Model train fans often design a rail yard with such a set up and just use other model trains. Weathering the trains and detailing the roundhouse at the center can really bring this setup together. These are all good starting set ups and none of them shut out any future layout possibilities. The oval and concentric circles are particularly well suited to later emendation.
Enhance viewer sight lines to maximize the appearance of depth:
A simple trick to conjure a stronger sense of depth is to show off your train at an angle so that the diamond head-on view of your HO model train track creates a greater illusion of depth. Paint fading hills and cloud lines along the back walls to further maximize this effect.
Finally, use accessories like buildings and uneven terrain to conjure a greater sense of contrast:
Another way we can trick the viewer into believing that our display is larger is to add accessories like tiny trees and little hills or piles of pebbles so that the train is at times blocked from sight. Especially useful to this goal is to have a very large building structure on mountain surface next to the train tracks so that when the train goes by the sense of contrast will make the viewer believe they are actually looking on a far away landscape rather than just a model train layout.
Remember that this is just the first step toward your model train empire. It won’t be long before you master the skills to realize really impressive model train layouts.
